Speeding / Speeding Ticket / Speeding Ticket Penalties / Florida

Following are the penalties for speeding tickets in FL are as follows:

Less than 15 mph over: An adjudication (a finding of guilt), a fine (which should be listed on the back of the ticket, in a separate hand out or you can call the Clerk of Court and ask), and three (3) points on your driving record. The Judge can also require you to attend driving school or, if you are eligible, then you can elect driving school, successfully complete it in a timely fashion, pay a reduced fine and get no points on your driver license.

Between 15 and 30 mph over: An adjudication (a finding of guilt), a fine (which should be listed on the back of the ticket, in a separate hand out or you can call the Clerk of Court and ask), and four (4) points on your driving record. Again, the Judge can also require you to attend driving school or, if you are eligible, then you can elect driving school, successfully complete it in a timely fashion, pay a reduced fine and get no points on your driver license.

Between 30 and 50 over: You can be arrested and taken to jail or given a PTA/NTA (promise / notice to appear in Court), but either way, and again, Court is mandatory (i.e. you are not able to pay the fine without appearing before a Judge). If you are adjudicated guilty then you can expect to pay a much higher fine (up to $500.00), get four (4) points on your driving record, be required to take advanced driving school and face a possible suspension of your driver’s license.

50 mph + over: You can be arrested and taken to jail or given a PTA/NTA (promise / notice to appear in Court), but either way, and again, Court is mandatory (i.e. you are not able to pay the fine without appearing before a Judge). If you are convicted in this category then you will receive a fine of up to $1000.00, enhanced traffic school and possible license suspension. For a second offense, the fine increase up to $2500.00 plus a mandatory one (1) year revocation of your driver’s license. If you are a three-time repeat offender then you face felony prosecution (a 3rd degree felony carrying a maximum of 5 years in state prison) and you will be subject to a fine of up to $5000.00, plus a loss of your driving privilege for up to ten (ten) years.
