Police Stings.... They suck, and, well, they sting.
Sometimes they even sting other cops, and this past Friday (February 27th, 2015) a Broward Sheriff Office (BSO) sting stung the now-former Chief of the Miami Gardens Police Department, Stephen Johnson, pictured below (he was fired on the spot)....
Now-former-Chief Johnson was arrested Friday night in a Dania Beach, FL (that's in Broward County, which borders Miami-Dade County to the North) motel room after he handed over $100.00 to undercover BSO detectives whom he believed were going to provide to him with a "two-girl 30 minute special". Johnson had gone to the hotel after responding to an ad which had been posted by BSO detectives in the escort section of an unnamed website and which listed a telephone number and pricing rates. Johnson called the number, had "several conversations" with undercover deputies (** it is unknown whether these calls were recorded or not), specified his preference (which included his acknowledgement that he "wanted to do everything" and his request for high heels as he acknowledged his "fetish for high heels") and then showed up on time and as agreed, tendering cash for sex to cops. Instead of doing "everything" with two high heel clad women Johnson got the police-special-dominatrix package, including being forced up against a wall, patted down, handcuffed, manhandled into a police vehicle, perp walked into the station, booked, transported to the county jail, processed and ultimately released the next day after the booking process.
Look, I don't begrudge anyone for making a bad - or even a stupid - decision, most especially when no one is physically injured, and the system, at least here in the 305, agrees with me. In solicitation of prostitution cases here in Miami-Dade, as a first time offender Johnson would almost certainly be PTI (pre-trial intervention / diversion) eligible. He would be required to take an AIDS test and to watch an online AIDS class, maybe do some community service or pay a fine and then his charge would be dismissed. And perhaps that will be his fate in Broward County as well. Regardless, I am glad that he is no longer at the helm of a police department because, forgetting (for the moment) that he has thoroughly embarrassed both his department and cops everywhere, how freaking stupid is this alleged Chief?
Let's see: 1) I know that you are "stressed" but apparently you have never heard of either the 5th Amendment, the concept of "invoking" or NOT discussing your case with anyone but your lawyer, because I cannot imagine a cop with any sort of experience, hell even rookies know this, who would give an interview to reporters after being released from jail - but you did, and you cited "stress" as the basis for your poor decision making (you can see the "interview" given as Johnson walked out of jail here); 2) What kind of Mickey Mouse Police Department are you running, and how little real-world exposure do you have AS A POLICE CHIEF, to not know, and suspect, that many online ads (as well as roadside "offers") are in fact operations just waiting to sting an easily fooled fool?; and 3) Leaving aside alleged police training and experience, have you never heard the expression that "things which appear too good to be true usually are not"? If any two women that you do not know, well, very well in fact, agree to let you do "everything" with them and further to dress up as you wish for the sum of $100.00, and you buy that, then I've got an even better deal for you... I'll sell you this here bridge for $100.00... pinky promise...
