Social Media prompts Teen Burglars to Break into House, & what they steal & what they do is, well, brutal ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

Meet 17 y/o Devin M. Gesell of St. Charles County, Missouri, that's him / his mug shot below....

Devin is accused of breaking into a home in St Peter’s, Missouri  in November, 2014 with two others - a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old who can not be named because they are juveniles. According to police the trio knew the family who lived at the home and had planned the burglary after seeing a Facebook post which indicated they were going to be away.

So into the neighbor's home the trio went, vis-a-vis the back door, and out they came, with a necklace worth $500, an a Xbox 360 game system,  several bottles of Rx drugs, including oxycodone and morphine, over $800 in cash and what they thought to be a "stash of cocaine" which was secreted inside of a wooden box.  Per Devin and company's confessions, it was not until after they "tasted the ashes" that the genii realized their mistake, throwing  what turned out to be the homeowner's father's ashes out of their car window.  None of the three could remember where they threw the ashes out so the police have not been able to retrieve them.

The kids were caught after police tracked them through an IP address which was used on the Xbox and Devin was charged on March 5th, 2015 with burglary and two counts of theft (his accomplices were referred to juvenile authorities for separate prosecution).  Per Debora Matthews, the victim of the robbery: "I just couldn't believe that they would take the ashes. But you know, they were kids and I guess just stupid."

Debora is more forgiving than many would be (myself included) but there is a lesson to be learned:  Think before you POST SENSITIVE THINGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA.  Advising the world that you will be out of town is tantamount to inviting ass clowns like Devin and company to burglarize your home.  And the one thing that you can be absolutely certain of in this world is that there is no ass clown deficiency...

The other thing to be gleamed, for you would be thieves, is that when you log online, be it on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or even XBox (or other online "gaming" system) then you create a digital fingerprint.  I'd expect young folk like Devin and company to be more tech savvy than they were, but then again I'd also expect them to be slightly less sociopathic...
