Davie, FL Police Officer Maiker Sanchez had a nice dinner with family and friends, right up to the point where he accidentally shot himself in the foot.
No that's neither Maiker nor what happened, but what did happen is an equally stupid (borderline EPIC) Police FAIL!
As many folks, LEO's and civilian, do, Maiker carries his own personal (non-department issued) firearm when he is off duty. Maiker's gun of choice is the Glock .380 (seen below).
Apparently, instead of properly holstering his weapon, Maiker chose to carry it, locked and loaded, inside of his front pants pocket. Sadly for him, he also had his car keys in that pocket. Maiker was walking out of Geronimos Bar and Grill on University Drive when one of his dinner companions, who was walking in front of him, heard a "pop", turned around toward the source of the sound and saw Maiker on the floor holding his bloody foot.
Police investigators believe that the gun accidentally discharged when Maiker pulled his keys out of the pocket, the key ring snagging the trigger and causing the gun to fire.
Memo to the Folks: If you are going to carry a firearm then please take that responsibility seriously. Get proper training in use, possession and all around safety and always holster your firearm.
Memo to Maiker: 1) Way to set an example of responsible gun safety training; 2) Good luck living this down in the locker room; and 3) Speedy recovery.
