Imagine being a parent, a mother, of a nineteen (19) y/o kid who graduated high school, attends college, works at night and is, by all reasonably measurable means, a "good" kid. So there you are, a basically proud parent, watching the evening news with your son when you see a news report about a wanted suspect in an open burglary and rape case, and when the surveillance video starts to roll lo and behold you see your son....
Sadly, that is precisely what happened to Brenda Ramon on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015, when she had sat down with her nineteen (19) y/o son Anthony to watch the evening news and a report came up involving a teenager wanted for alleged burglary and rape. As the surveillance footage (which you can see by clicking here) started playing on the screen Brenda immediately recognized her son.
Turns out that Anthony was wanted in connection with a the brutal attack of a thirty-three (33) y/o woman in Washington Heights, New York. Anthony reportedly started to follow the woman after having first seen her on a subway train in Midtown Manhattan. Police reported that he got off at her stop and then proceeded to trail her to her building, where he followed her into the elevator, exposed himself and started to masturbate. Anthony then reportedly grabbed the woman's arms and attempted to force himself on her, but she managed to run off the elevator and escape uninjured into her apartment.
After seeing the news report Brenda woke her husband, told him what she had seen and they made the difficult decision to take Anthony down to the police precinct where he was arrested for charges including rape and burglary. Per Anthony's father Franklin: "It was shocking, to see your son up there, wanted for some crime that we knew nothing about. He’s a good kid, goes to college, works in the night."
To be sure there are worse things, but still, the Ramon family saga is among...
Memo to Brenda and Franklin Ramon: I am sorry for your anguish but props to you for making the tough, but correct, choice to be a parent and to teach your child - no matter the age - difficult but necessary life lessons. He obviously has issues and had he gotten away with this crime then there is no telling what he may have done next. With any luck he will get help and treatment and learn and grow and become a better man for his youthful failings.
