Social Media Boast to "Kill the Competition" at Pokemon World Championship ends in Arrest of Men with Shotgun and AR-15 ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

suppose that this is just another example of my being old and outdated, but wtf is with adults who play Pokemon?  I though this was a kid-thing.  Is this like some sort of present day Dungeons and Dragons?  I guess that...

And so was the case with these two knuckleheads from Ohio, 27 y/o James Stumbo (below left) and 18 y/o Kevin Norton (below right), who drive from Iowa to Boston to "compete" (is this seriously "competition") in the Pokémon World Championships in the "Masters Division".

The problem?  Apparently these genii had a little more than playing video games and power trading Pokemon cards in mind as evidenced by their Facebook posts preceding their cross-country Pokemon quest.

Dumbo's, er, Stumbo's, reference to "killing the competition" was followed up by a photo that Stumbo had posted a photo of a 12-gauge shotgun and an AR-15 rifle, laid on the back of a white car, on Facebook.  Coupled with Facebook photos of these clowns with guns on their respective Facebook pages they were perceived as two (2) potential gunmen who were boasting about violent plans for Pokémon World Championship the on social media.

So, naturally, with thousands of attendees planned for the annual tournament, which was being held in Boston, Massachusetts, authorities quickly began an investigation. In this case, private sector security staff at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston (which hosted the {alleged} competition) alerted Boston Police Intelligence Division officials to the deadly threats on Thursday, August 20th, 2015.

Dumbo, er Stumbo, and Norton were stopped while trying to enter the Hynes Center on Thursday, one (1) day before the tournament kicked off, and when detectives searched the pair's car they found a Remington 12 gauge shotgun and DPM5 Model rifle (also known as an AR-15), as well as several hundred rounds of ammunition and a hunting knife (the actual items which were removed from the subject vehicle are pictured below).  Neither of these clowns had a license to carry such weapons and both have been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and other firearms counts.

In a statement by the Pokémon Company they advised that attendees had informed them of the social media threats earlier in the week prompting them to alert staff at Hynes Convention Center.  "Due to quick action, the potential threat was resolved. The Pokémon Company International takes the safety of our fans seriously and will continue to ensure proper security measures are a priority."  Apparently the Pokémon World Championships is an invitation-only event, the annual competition features the top video game and trading card game players from across the world and players compete for more than $500,000 in scholarship prizes.  Who knew?

Memo to the Folks:  The real story here is that, once again, social media (and stupid would-be-criminals) has (have) foiled potentially disastrous plans.  But for these knuckleheads boasting and posting they may have entered the Hynes center, lain in wait with their shotgun, AR-15 and hundreds of rounds of ammo and killed / injured who knows how many.  What can you say except:  Thank ________ for...
