Let me preface this blogpost with a disclaimer. I always fact check stories before I blog about and then post them, but this one has limited resources and may turn out to have been untrue. Still, should that prove to be the case there is still a valid lesson to be learned, so here goes... Per,
A student, believed to be named Patrick Davidson, sent an email to his teacher after a night of hardcore drinking. The e-mail exchange was shared on Reddit (you can view the link here) and has now garnered more than a million views. Pat's redacted e-mail is pictured below...
And the teacher's response follows:
In case they are not clear enough for you to read here are some highlights: Pat drunkenly sends his email asking for an extension of time to submit a paper and adds gratuitous language essentially apologizing for his teacher's bald head. and offering to help his teacher find a girlfriend who can get him his hair back. After asking for the extension Pat says "I'm really f***ed right now and will be sick as f*** tomorrow", and then Pat ends with "keep slaying boi" and "Love you and see you Monday. Good f***ing yard." In response Mr. Martin, apparently a good spirited soul, grants Pat the extension, advises that his wife likes his bald head and that "I don't get paid enough to get hair implants". After that Mr. Martin asks 'What were you drinking last night? Next time you email me I'd like a bottle of whatever you had so I don't have to remember what you said", and then he sign's off with Pat's own nonsensical sign-off of "good yard". Memo to Patrick:
Whether they are true or not the texts were shared on Reddit and have garnered about 1,700 responses, which goes to show the power of social media. More importantly, however (insert Memo to the Folks here), is the basic, fundamental and universal mathematics principal that booze + technology =
Memo to the Folks continued: Anything that you e-mail or post on social media can and will be used against you, in a court of law or otherwise. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to understand the inter-relationship between social media and the law (and in this case with an emphasis on the accuracy of the adage that "once posted always posted").
