We all now know beyond any doubt that...
But did you know that it was an electronic's sniffing Police K-9, a two (2) y/o Black Lab named "Bear" (pictured below), who uncovered a key piece of evidence - a hidden flash drive containing damning data (reportedly being a cache of kiddie porn images) which human searchers had missed - which led to the former Subway spokesman's guilty plea to kiddie porn charges in federal court?
A search warrant was served on Fogle's Zionsivlle, Indiana, home in July, 2015 and so the plethora of human searchers searched, but all of them missed a hidden flash drive which was located by Bear and which reportedly contained a cache sexually explicit images of children.
Assistant United States Attorney Steven DeBrota though that he was being "punked" when he was told of Bear's abilities, but it turns out that Bear, a playful black Lab, is truly one (1) of only five (5) dogs in the entire country who has been trained to locate digital data on command. According to his trainer, Todd Jordan, Bear can easily track down any device, from a fingernail-size SD card to an iPad. The same way that other dogs are trained to sniff out cocaine or missing people, Bear uses his keen sense of smell to pick up a chemical scent which emanates from even the tiniest of electronic components. When Bear picks up the smell of an electronic media storage device in a room he is trained to sit down, and when Bear is ordered by his handler to show his find Bear points to it with his nose, earning himself an edible reward.
Todd, who is a Deputy Fire Chief in Anderson, Indiana by trade, got Bear as a rescue dog about a year ago and spent four (4) months training him to find hidden electronic devices using food treats as an incentive. Todd and Bear performed a demonstration on NBC New (which you can watch by clicking here) where they proved that, as Todd says, "Labs are best at this. They'll do anything to please their owner."
Including the Fogle case, Bear has taken part in five (5) investigations which have been carried out by the Indiana Crimes Against Children Task Force. Sadly, Bear will be moving to Washington State on Thursday, August 27th, 2015 to begin his new career as a Deputy with the Seattle Police Department, which purchased Bear for nearly $10,000 to help them solve cyber-crimes. Todd has described the upcoming move as being "bittersweet". Fogle, who faces five to twelve (5 - 12) years in federal prison when he is sentenced for seeking out underage prostitutes and for obtaining and possessing child pornography, has a much more bittersweet experience ahead...
