The "Cowboy Days" are Over - Police Militarization Causes 28 Year Veteran Wyoming Deputy Sheriff to Resign ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ **ARRESTED

Meet Gene Bryson, the epitome of a Western American Law-Man.  That's him below...

And again...

Gene Bryson has that Gene Hackman / "Unforgiven" look doesn't he?

Well he did anyhow.  Now, after forty (40) years in law enforcement, the last twenty-eight (28) of them having been served with the Sublette County, Wyoming, Sheriff's Office, Gene has reigned.  Why?  Two (2) words... "Police Militarization".

In the interests of "safety and uniformity" newly elected Sheriff Stephen Haskell has imposed new uniform policies - a dress code - which requires that all Deputies don black trousers, a tan shirt, black boots and a ball cap.   Sheriff Haskell says:  "I'm very much for the Western way of life and the look. And that's the way I dress.  However for a professional outfit... I like everybody to look the same. We are one team unified in one purpose.  That is to do our job." Below you can see the new look.

Rather than swapping out his cowboy hat, boots and either (summer) leather vest or (winter) wool jacket (which he's been wearing since age 19) Gene chose to turn in his star instead of complying with Sheriff Haskell's requirements which argue that "cowboy boots are slippery on ice and cowboy hats can blow off in Wyoming's blustery wind".  Gene was born and raised on a ranch in Montana in 1945 and has worked on ranches in Montana, Colorado and Wyoming.  Says Gene: "I've had a cowboy hat on since [I was} 19... That's what looks good to me in the Sheriff's Department.  It's Western.  It's Wyoming...  I'm not going to change.  I've been here for 40-odd years in the Sheriff's Office and I;m not going to go out and buy combat boots and throw my vest and hat away and say 'This is the new me'".  And it's not just Gene.  Bryson's "Old West Law-Man look" was so popular in his town folks would often stop him to ask for their pictures to be taken with him.

The silver lining?  Gene will spend more time both running his gun shop (which he ran part-time while he was in full-time law enforcement) and with his wife, kids and grand kids.  Gene Bryson... a Western American Legend.  Your bravery - and refusal to cave to 21st century police militarization would make these guys proud....
