Meet 10 y/o Sophia Contos. That's her below....
Sophie is a Troop 601-60 Girl Scout who, along with a few of her co-Scouts and her mom, were selling cookies outside of a San Jose Safeway Supermarket last weekend.
The money they collected, some $300.00, was being secured in a cash box, this cash box in fact...
But along came a spider who sat down beside her... Actually, along came 23 y/o Phillip Gintz, heroin addict (pictured below), who grabbed a hold of said cash box, and try as little Sophie did to maintain her grip, Gintz proved to be too strong, winning the "tug-of-war", pulling it away from young Sophie and fleeing on foot. He returned later to get his truck from the parking lot.
Sophie said that she had noticed Gintz eyeing the box and that she did her best to guard it. Then, said Sohpie: "I keep my hands on the box and start to pull it away and all of a sudden he goes for it. I jerk it away but he’s too strong and he gets it." So Sophie yelled as Gintz got away, and her mother was able to observe Gintz. When Gintz returned to the parking lot shortly thereafter to get his truck she (mom) watched and memorized his license plate, which she then called in to the cops and which led to a quick apprehension.
Upon being pulled over Gintz quickly confessed to the crime. He admitted that he had taken the $300.00 and had thrown the money box in a nearby creek. Gintz said that he was "desperate" and that he "needed a fix really bad" for his daily heroin habit. He handed over the $300.00 and led cops to the creek where he had tossed the box, which they later recovered with the assistance of a special colleague, a police K-9. Gintz claimed tha this was the first time that he had stolen anything to support his heroin habit and apologized profusely but he was charged with Strong-Arm Robbery for the same. (Gintz gave a behind-the-jail-house-bars interview to NBC Bay Area News where he explained himself... **Memo to the Folks: This is otherwise called a recorded CONFESSION... which you can watch here BUT SHOULD NEVER, EVER DO if you get arrested.)
In the interim, after apprehending Gintz the San Jose Police Officers returned to the locus in quo and not only gave the Troops back their stolen $300.00 but also bought up the lot of their remaining cookies ($240.00 worth) as well as kindly chipping in an additional $60.00 for good measure.
Memo to the San Jose PD: Good Cops!
Memo to Phillip Gintz: You are lucky that you didn't mess with this Troop....
Still, stealing from Girl Scouts? Apology or not...
