More proof that law enforcement trolls the internet ~ US-DOD-DARPA builds "Memex" to search the "dark net" ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ **ARRESTED

Cops (municipal, state, federal, Interpol) troll the internet looking for folks who go to, look in, download from or upload to targeted (and usually, but not always "deviant") sites.  They also conduct internet "stings", posing as children or deviants and looking to bag anyone foolish enough to take the bait.  This is a fact.

It is also a fact that, very much like a shark which must never rest, constantly swimming and eating to sustain it's life, so too is law enforcement perpetually seeking out new and improved methods at accomplishing it's ends.

Enter DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - a branch of the U.S. Department of Defense which is charged with developing new technologies for military use), which developed a search engine called "Memex"(a combination of memory and index) which both scours content and identifies subtle patterns in activity on "the dark net" ("the dark net" being a hive of illegal activity, rife with child pornography, drug deals and human trafficking which is buried so deep in the bowels of the internet that it is largely considered to be out of the reach of mainstream search engines and law enforcement, until Memex that is).  The program got its name from a hypothetical pre-computer aged device which was described in a 1945 "Atlantic Monthly" article which would supplement human memory and ability to store and cross-reference all sorts of books, records and other data...  and like most science fiction, ultimately it becomes a reality.

I don't claim to understand such things (if I did then I'd probably be working at NASA or for the NSA) but what I've read describes Memex as follows:  Per DARPA... "Today's web searches use a centralized, one-size fits all approach that searches the internet with the same set of tools for all queries. [But such] common search practices miss information in the deep web, the parts of the web which are not indexed by standard commercial search engines, and which ignore shared content across pages.  Memex was designed to overcome these challenges by extending the reach of current search capabilities and quickly and thoroughly organize subsets of information based upon individual interests... Memez looks behind standard search results for patterns, links and similar behaviors.  The software scours all aspects of the web, including those hidden in the dark net, to create data maps that might reveal clues about illegal activity."  The "plan" was for Memexz to do such things as to uncover human trafficking rings by searching for patterns in in the number of online sex advertisements being posted from certain regions or from porn sites which feature the same email addresses or phone numbers, and apparently it's in use in both the US and the UK.

My point, again, is to remind you, the Folks, as I typed above, that cops (municipal, state, federal, Interpol) troll the internet looking for folks who go to, look in, download from or upload to targeted (and usually, but not always "deviant") sites.  They also conduct internet "stings", posing as children or deviants and looking to bag anyone foolish enough to take the bait. The fact is that, very much like a shark which must never rest, constantly swimming and eating to sustain it's life, so too is law enforcement perpetually seeking out new and improved methods at accomplishing it's ends.  So, if you are "night surfing" - negotiating the "dark net" - then be aware....
