Parents Arrested at FL Hotel for Child Abuse when the choose Booze over their Sunburned Foster Kids ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

Meet 31 y/o Mounir El-Rhazouani, pictured below...

And his wife, 32 y/o Rebecca El-Rhazouani, pictured below...

Both of whom were booked into the Volusia County Jail on child abuse charges over the weekend.

The jail doesn't have the same amenities as the hotel that they were enjoying (the Hawaiian Inn in Daytona Shores, Florida) at the time of their arrest...

But that's what happens when your a drunk Alabama couple who forces your foster children to stay in the sun, even though they were already sunburned and not withstanding their repeated pleas to go indoors.  (No, those are not the kids in question... it's just an illustration.)

Anyhow...  In this case hotel staff contacted the authorities to express their concerns for the children's (aged 2 and 5) well-being.  The staff reportedly told deputies that the children were sunburned, dehydrated and had asked to go inside multiple times but the parents refused to get up from their table by the pool where they were enjoying adult beverages.  After police arrival a hotel staff member was recorded (on "body cam") telling an officer: "The child wanted to get out of the sun so bad that it was literally running to that door over there, screaming, trying to get into the door and the father would not take the child inside."

"Body cam" footage (which can be seen here) shows the parents alone drinking beer and then telling deputies they have left the children in the hotel room on their own. Rebecca El-Rhazouani told officers one of her children had eczema, alleging that is why the toddler may have appeared red. The parents then led officers to the room, where they found more beer and a pocket knife.  Rebecca is then heard on the radio saying: "My poor babies, oh, my gosh, my poor babies. I was going to put them to bed, I promise, I was going to get my stuff and put them to bed. Oh, my gosh." She claimed she was only going downstairs to get their belongings but cops didn't buy that crap, taking the El-Rhazouani's to jail, directly to jail, not past go...

This article is disturbing on many levels but it does have it's pluses, two (2) of them in fact:  1) It is heartwarming (pun not intended) that the hotel staff called the cops; and 2)  I really like the fact that responding officers were wearing "body cams".  This proactive action leaves no doubt as to what was observed, both visually and orally, and it is a true and objective witness to the same.  These digital devices are small, easy to use and invaluable tools for determining the truth and enforcing justice.

Every cop in every jurisdiction in every State should be wearing an operational body cam on every minute of every shift.  Further, if the body cam is not worn, not on, not functioning or if it is tampered with in any way then there should be a presumption against law enforcement.
