I usually don't like it when celebs chime in on politics or social issues, preferring that they spend their time making movies which entertain and keep their personal thoughts and opinions to themselves, however, in this case I make an exception for the incomparable Morgan Freeman. He's played, among other roles, God and the President, and he is one of the world's preeminent narrators, proving that when Morgan Freeman speaks folks listen, and just last week he once again opened up about being an advocate for legalizing marijuana, claiming that "pot is very useful... I'll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it! This movement is really a long time coming, and it's getting legs -longer legs." This is not a newly found opinion for Freeman. He has been consistent about this for years.
That said, Freeman gave an interview last week for his new movie (Transcendence) wherein (at about 0:52) he admits that he gets energy from smoking pot (you can see the interview here).
Freeman, now aged 77, also gave an interview to the Daily Beast (which you can read here), is a longtime marijuana user who was reportedly "turned on" to the drug by his first wife "many years ago". In 2008 the Oscar-winning film legend was in a car accident. He had been driving through Mississippi when his 1997 Nissan Maxima skidded off the road and flipped several times. Emergency responders rescued Freeman from the crash using the Jaws of Life, and he was taken to the hospital with a shattered left shoulder, arm and elbow and his nerves had to be repaired during a four (4) hour long surgery. His injuries from that accident continue to cause him pain today, and Freeman still wears a yellow compression glove on his left hand, which he hasn't regained full use of, to prevent blood pooling. Pointing to the glove, Freeman told the Daily Beast that "marijuana has many useful uses. I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana... They're talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they've discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life. That right there, to me, says, 'Legalize it across the board!'... And what negative effects does it have? Look at Woodstock 1969. They said, 'We're not going to bother them or say anything about smoking marijuana,' and not one problem or fight. Then look at what happened in '99,' [referencing the less marijuana-friendly 30th-anniversary event, which resulted in riots and arrests]."
Memo to Morgan Freeman: AGREED! Legalize (or at a minimum decriminalize), Regulate, Educate and Tax, Tax Tax the Hell out of it.
