Is it worth approximately $400,000.00 per year to spend five (5) years in prison? Not for me it isn't but that's the real math for 48 y/o Judith Oaks (pictured below), a former Rialto, California Unified School District accountant who was convicted and sentenced for embezzling / stealing $1.845 million ("million", with an "M") in lunch money (yes, "lunch money", I sh*t you not) over a seven (7) year period.
Oaks was a school accountant for the Rialto, California Unified School District who earned a respectable $77,000.00 salary, but apparently that was not enough to support her lavish lifestyle. Because of the accountant's own "paper trial" the government was easily able to prove that Oaks had two (2) homes, took expensive vacations, owned several vehicles, attended high priced concerts and sporting events and had recurring monthly credit card bills averaging between $10-12,000.00, which, for a kicker, she always paid in full and with cash. As stated, the government proved the Oaks had pilfered $1.845 million in lunch money funds from twenty-nine (29) different schools over a seven (7) year period of time, but they suspect that Oaks actually stole upwards of $3 million during her twenty-five (25) years on the job.
So how did she get caught? Oaks was caught on camera physically stuffing lunch money into both her bra and a large duffel bag (the video is available on the linked article). Here is a still clip of Oaks cramming piles of cash into the duffel bag...
And here she is seen stuffing the left over cash which she couldn't manage to cram into the full duffel bag instead into her bra.
Arrested on August 13th, 2013, after a Los Angeles, CA County jury found her guilty of embezzling public funds Oaks was sentenced on Thursday, January 8th, 2015 to serve five (5) years in prison and pay $1.845 million in restitution.
With stealing lunch money from the school district on one's resume its hard to imagine what Oaks' next venture will be. Memo to Judith:
