On Tuesday, January 20th, 2015 three (3) kilos of crystal meth fell from the sky to the Tijuana ground when a narcotic-loaded drone crashed in Mexico near the San Ysidro border.
The drone, a "Spreading Wings S900" retails for about $1,500.00 and is marketed as "highly portable, powerful aerial system for the demanding filmmaker". Apparently the designers didn't anticipate a three (3) kilo payload...
Mexican authorities have not disclosed any information about either the drone's origin or its intended location, but it is clear that the drug cartels are using technology to be as inventive as possible. There are allegations that the DEA has been registering an average of 150 "narco-drones" attempting to cross the Mexico-US border each year since 2012.
Considering all of the other avenues used to transport narcotics (human "mules", cut-out products ranging from clothing to fruit, narco-subs... many of which are pictured below) its no wonder that the cartels are going drone. Hell, if they're good enough for US law enforcement and the US military then why not?
