TSA takes 72 y/o Senior Citizen into Custody at Newark Airport when they Discover an Ice Pick hidden inside of his Cane ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

On Christmas Eve a presently unnamed and unpictured 72 year old senior citizen was taken into custody at Newark Airport and  then turned over to the Port Authority Police for passing through a TSA checkpoint with a weapon.

At the TSA checkpoint the senior citizen put what appeared to be a perfectly normal cane / wooden walking stick through the X-ray machine and when the monitoring TSA officer noticed the strange interior of the cane's handle he sounded an alarm.

TSA Officers immediately inspected the cane, which had a twist and pull handle, and found an ice pick hidden inside.  Agents confiscated the cane before taking the New Jersey resident, who claimed to have been given the dangerous cane as a gift, into custody.

But the story has a happy Christmas ending.  The man, who was traveling to Georgia with his wife, was described as "not having full cognitive abilities" and, in a rare moment of law enforcement clarity, police determined that the man was telling the truth, that he was not planning on harming anyone with the cane, released him and even dug up a cane for him to use from the airport's lost and found.

Memo to the Folks:  Be very careful when and what you pack and be mindful of your possessions when you approach TSA checkpoints.  The overwhelming odds are that if you try to pass - intentionally or not - TSA with a weapon then you will probably not get as lucky as the elderly man in this instance.  He made his flight but you will be lucky to make bail.
