That, above, is San Francisco Police Officer Fulgado, and he is holding an unnamed tabby cat who assisted in diffusing a most dangerous situation involving his (the cat's) human.
The cat's human, who can be seen circled in red in the top right of the photo above, had been stopped by California Highway Patrol officers while driving a white Toyota Highlander which had no license plates at approximately 2:30 pm in San Francisco on Wednesday, October 7th, 2015. Cops quickly determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen when the man, who was being detained on the sidewalk while cops did their cop stuff, did criminal stuff... he up and bolted and ran up a fire escape and into a nearby building.
The human managed to make his way to a third floor window where he perched himself and threatened to jump. Police had shut down traffic and a large crowd gathered as negotiators tried to talk the human down as he dangled precariously in the window's ledge.
Two (2) officers tried to convince the man to surrender but it was only when he saw his cat that he decided to come down.
The standoff that lasted more than three (3) hours with the suspected car thief being taken into custody shortly after 6:00 pm. (In an effort to coax him down the cat was brought to the scene by members of the human's family who, astutely, believed that he would not want to die when he saw his beloved tabby.)
Per San Francisco police Spokesperson Grace Gatpandan: "Never underestimate the power of an owner’s love for their pet." Officer Albie Esparza added: "Thanks to #SFPD, #CHP and #SFFD and the cat for bringing the standoff to an end. A person's love for their animal is unlike any other. He surrendered shortly after seeing his cat."
