Career Criminal Tries to Rob Woman at Gas Station but her Son Beats the Would-Be Robber with a Tire Iron & Holds him until Police Arrive ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

Luther Dunn of Polk County, Florida is no stranger to local Florida law enforcement; just take a look at three (3) of his mugshots from three (3) different FL jurisdictions. He reportedly has seven (7) prior felony convictions and is considered to be a "career criminal".

Below is Luther's most recent mug shot, and the one (1) which is likely to result in felony conviction number eight (8)...

On Friday, September 18th, 2015 Luther tried to rob the wrong folks at a Sunoco gas station in Lakeland, FL.

Kim Stewart (pictured below) works at the Sunoco in question.

Her son, 17 y/o Nate Stewart (pictured below) was sitting inside of his mom Kim's car outside the gas station when Luther approached him, brandishing a knife and reportedly said "Give me some gas money".

Nate exited the vehicle and ran inside of the store to get his mother.  As the Stewarts walked outside together Luther reportedly approached them with his shirt off and that's when Nate grabbed a tire iron from the trunk of his mom's car and hit Dunn with it.  Per Kim:  "Nate picked him up, flipped him upside down and dropped him on his head. I thought he broke his neck.   I am very proud of him. I didn't realize he was that strong though." By the time that Polk County Deputy Sheriffs arrived Luther was a bloody mess, having been pummeled by Nate with a tire iron.

Luther had a different version of events for the cops, claiming there was no robbery attempt, that he had merely tried to grab the teen and that's when Nate attacked him. I don't know but I suppose that the facts that Luther being a career criminal with seven (7) prior felony convictions had something to do with the cops believing Kim and Nate and charging Luther with attempted armed robbery.  Noting that none of the articles that I read indicated whether or not a knife was recovered from the scene, regardless, Memo to Luther Dunn (and the Folks):  The Florida Legislature has created several categories of enhanced penalties for repeat offenders (please see Florida Statute 775.084) including Habitual Felony Offenders, Habitual Violent Felony Offenders, Three Time Violent Felony Offenders, Violent Career Criminals and Prison Release Reoffenders.  The criteria vary but the common denominator is that as you rack up felony priors (especially for violent crimes) you face stiffer penalties than you would were it a first offense.  You also face minimum mandatory prison sentences, are precluded from acquiring gain time (time off of your sentence) and are likely ineligible for any form of early release, work release or prison "privileges".  Thus, "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time"...
