An eight (8) month old baby boy named Jayce Markell Benjamin was found dead in the parking lot of a Walmart in northeast Ohio after he had been left in a car by two (2) different family members over a ten (10) hour period.
Police received a 911 call at around 5:30 pm on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015 that the boy had been discovered unresponsive inside of his family's SUV by his grandmother, a Macedonia Walmart employee who had driven the SUV to work earlier that day.
The incident, which police are calling a "tragic accident", began after the boy's father had taken his four (4) children to a day care center just before 8:00 am that morning. The father dropped off three (3) of the kids but had forgotten about baby Jayce, who had been seated in the SUV’s third row. After the children were taken to the day care the father drove the maroon Buick Rendezvous back to the family's home in Garfield Heights and parked it in a shaded driveway where it remained until 11:00 am when Jayce's grandmother got int the SUV and drove to work without realizing the child was still in the back seat It was not until the other three (3) kids had been brought home from day care that Jayce's mother realized that her youngest son was not with his siblings, prompting mom to call her mother at Walmart, who went out to the SUV in the parking lot and discovered the baby boy in the backseat.
Jayce was pronounced dead at the scene at about 5:45 pm and police are convinced that Jayce was not intentionally harmed.
Memo to the Folks: I cannot fathom the pain that this family is suffering or that young Jayce sufffered over the course of the last hours of his helpless life, and I also cannot second guess the first responders who evaluated the scene and investigated the facts and circumstances. All I can do it to opine that, unfortunately, accidents can and do happen.
