Smuggler Runs out of Food & Water on Ocean & Resort to Cocaine for Sustenance ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

Three British (3) men were arrested in September, 2014 and were each sentenced to eight (8) years (one got ten (10) years) in prison on Friday, April 24th, 2015 for being caught smuggling more than a ton (literally) of cocaine when their yacht, the sixty-two foot (62') sailing vessel named "Makayabella" was stormed and boarded by a Navy vessel about two hundred (200) miles off the south-west coast of Ireland.

The yacht was found after another vessel, known as the "Sea Breeze", had to be rescued in the Irish Sea after it ran out of fuel.

Irish authorities became suspicious at the large amount of food, diesel, cannabis and satellite phones found on board the Sea Breeze, so when the Makayabella was simultaneously reported to be floundering in the Atlantic, Irish and British Naval authorities suspected that the Sea Breeze was attempting to rendezvous with the Makayabella.

After confessions abounded authorities pieced together the following sea-smuggling-story:  In 2013 seventy (70) y/o John Powell took charge of the Makayabella in the Caribbean, sailing it for about a year as a charter boat so as to provide a viable cover story before picking up the 1,025 kg consignment of cocaine from Venezuela in August, 2014.  Powell (pictured below) was accompanied by Benjamin Mellor (pictured below Powell), with both being paid £100,000 for the trip, and later by Thomas Britteon, who was to receive £20,000.

Both Mellor and Britteon were described as "simply hired help" whereas Powell was given a longer sentence because he had flown out to inspect the yacht and knew through his son about the whole plan.  (Powell's forty-eight (48) y/o son Stephen is a "major player in Britain’s drugs underworld and was the ‘main man’ behind the operation", and is serving his own sixteen (16) year sentence for conspiracy to import cocaine).  In the interim, per Inspector Fergal Foley: "The Makayabella was in a grim state when they found it and was running out of drinking water.  To be blunt, they were delighted to see the navy".  But none of the three (3) men who had been crossing the Atlantic was happier than Benjamin Mellor, who had admittedly ripped open one of the forty-one (41) bales of cocaine and started snorting it after their food ran out and he had he broken his wrist.  Memo to Benji:  Rule #1 of Drug Dealing...
