Olive Fowler, a 70-year-old woman, was arrested on April 12, 2015 after taking a Caribbean Airlines flight from Guyana, South America, to New York's JFK International Airport and being caught smuggling four (4) pounds of cocaine in her girdle and underwear.
Authorities said they spotted her "sweating profusely" and "avoiding eye contact with officers" so they decided to pull her aside to conduct a search. After patting her down in a private room, investigators reportedly felt a "dense hard material" under her clothes. Olive was found to be wearing one pair of black underwear and one white girdle with white powder packed into the garments, and the packages tested positive for cocaine.
It is estimated the cocaine found in her panties have a street value of more than $73,000.00. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers placed Fowler under arrest, turned her over to Homeland Security officials and she now faces federal narcotics smuggling charges in Brooklyn Federal Court.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: As a veteran criminal defense lawyer I can tell you that it's all but impossible to deny either intent or knowledge when contraband is found on your person (much less where it is found, seemingly conspicuously hidden in a clandestine fashion). In cases like this, where there is no apparent defense (there is no viable 4th Amendment challenge to a "border search" as you have virtually no 4th Amendment rights when you are entering at a U.S. border) your and your lawyer's options are extremely limited. I suspect that Olive will enter a quick guilty plea and argue in mitigation of sentence that while what she did was wrong it wasn't nearly as bad or dangerous as what this guy did...
