VIDEO: Police and School Officials Offer OH High School Kids a chance to Volunteer to be Pepper Sprayed for a School "Criminal Science Technology" Project ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

A group of High School Students who are studying criminal science technology at Barberton High School in Barberton, Ohio got their parents to sign off on waivers so that they could participate in a class project which was reportedly designed to have the kids experience for themselves what getting pepper sprayed felt like (you can see "class project" for yourself on VIDEO by clicking here)

I honestly don't know what aggravates me more... The f*cktard who came up with this project?  The school administrators who signed off on it? The cops who though that this was a good idea?  The parents who knowingly waived their kids into this lunacy?

What's next for the Barberton High School's criminal science technology class?  Tasers?  Rubber Bullets?  Hell, why stop there... Water boarding?  Perhaps battery connected crocodile clips to kid's nipples or scrotums?

For most students school science experiments include things like dissecting a frog or adding vinegar to baking soda... and then there's science fair (which, unless you are a science geek, is many parents' and kids' annual living nightmare, but which at least makes some modicum of sense...).

The kids who's parents let them opt into this sh*t storm were lined up against a wall outside of their school while a cop pepper sprayed their faces.  And, just to add effect, while spraying the kids the cop was shouting: "Stop resisting, please comply" ("please"... exactly...).

In the video, students can, predictably, be heard screaming in pain after being pepper sprayed in their faces.

The kids double over, writhing in pain as the foreseeable effects of pepper spray hits them.

Following is the exact language that was contained in the waiver that went home with the kids for the parents to sign:

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian,
On Friday, May 12, 2017, as part of our defensive tactics training that we have covered this year, I will introduce the use and effects of law enforcement OC “Pepper Spray” to the students. Each student will have the option to be swabbed or receive a quick “burst” to the facial area with this chemical agent. It will cause irritation and a burning sensation to the eyes and nasal area for approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.
This is a controlled and safe experience for the students and is completely voluntary.
Please sign your option below and return the form by Monday, May 8, 2017.
Thank you,
Chief Milford

"It will cause irritation and a burning sensation to the eyes and nasal area for approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour."....

It is a documented fact that getting a direct blast of pepper / OC spray is "torturous".  The article that this blog post links to is from "Blue Lives Matter" and even they, an organization that "seeks to honor and recognize the actions of law enforcement, strengthen public support, and provide much-needed resources to law enforcement officers and their families" state that:  "While a strong inflammatory response and burning sensation is part of the experience, that’s only a relatively minor effect from the spray. Getting a direct shot to the face includes the added benefits of having an inability to open your eyes or control your breathing." Further, while this "miserable" experience continues for between 30 minutes and an hour (as Chief Milford stated, but what he failed to mention is that...) once it starts it cannot be stopped and that once the chemical gets into the pores of the skin flare-ups are expected to repeat for up to 24 hours.

When I was in junior high school (which is now called "middle school") a then-controversial decision was made to shoot and air a documentary called "Scared Straight".  This was a completely uncensored documentary (ergo why it was considered to be extremely controversial in the pre-cable 1970's) where a group of juvenile delinquents sat through a three-hour session with actual convicts, in fact they were a group of inmates known as the "lifers" (convicts who are / were serving life sentences in prison). The documentary was filmed at Rahway State Prison and the captured the "lifers" berating, screaming at, and otherwise terrifying the youthful offenders in an attempt to literally "scare them straight," (hence the film's title), so that those teenagers could / would make better decisions and avoid prison life.  If you didn't see "Scared Straight" then please believe me when I tell you that it both made sense and achieved it's intended goal (i.e. being an effective deterrent).

Now, I recognize that times, and kids, are radically different in 2017 than they were in 1978, but still, I fail to see any logical or rational reason as to why high school students need to experience the sensation of being pepper sprayed.  I know that law enforcement cadets must be pepper sprayed and tasered as a mandatory part of their training, and this makes sense to me (because they are adults - albeit many young adults - who are seeking a job in law enforcement, who will be tasked with the responsible use of these tools, who may inadvertently be exposed to them and who must, necessarily be familiar with the effects on both others and themselves); but where is the sense in pepper spraying teenagers who are not even permitted to lawfully possess pepper spray?

Memo to Chief Milford, to Barberton High School's administration and to the parents of the students who signed off on the incomplete waiver:  Congratulations!  You are the collective douche bags of the day!
