With all of the hoopla surrounding US-Mexico border security, traffickers (be them drug, human or otherwise) have gotten more and more brazen in their methods. They dig tunnels....
and they use submarines (so called "narco subs")...
and they even do it the old fashioned way (on foot)....
but as of late a new avenue has been added to their repertoire... Uber.
Human traffickers have now been caught using Uber to shuttle Central American migrants through Mexico to the US border. On June 10th, 2016 five (5) vehicles carrying 34 Central American migrants were reportedly apprehended while traveling together between the northern Mexican states of Zacatecas and Coahuila, and although it is not certain whether the Uber app was used it is clear that four (4) of the five (5) vehicles were linked to the Uber Technologies Inc platform,
All four (4) of the drivers reportedly claimed that they were not the owners of the cars but all claimed to work as Uber chauffeurs. Per reports the drivers left the northern Mexican city of Monterrey and picked up the migrants in Matehuala, which is about 200 miles further south. The caravan was reportedly headed for the city of Reynosa, which is about 340 miles north and abuts the Texas border. The migrants reportedly told investigators that they had each paid 3,000 pesos (roughly $162.00 US) to make the journey.
Uber's Mexico division stated that it bore no responsibility but that it was cooperating with authorities nonetheless. Per Uber: "The company does not own the cars registered on the platform, nor does it employ the drivers, who are independent contractors." Further, Uber claims that only three (3) of the drivers were registered in the database, one (1) of whom was dismissed nine (9) months earlier for unrelated reasons and the other two (2) of whom were discharged after this situation came to light.
