A Rapidly Escalating Domestic Violence Incident is Foiled when a "Smart Speaker" Overhears the Event and Calls the Sheriff's Department ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1



Domestic Violence.  It's real, it sucks, and, many times it goes unreported until well after the fact...




But, in the case of out of control 28 y/o Eduardo Barros (who's mug shot appears below), who, during a domestic argument on June 2nd, 2017, reportedly hit and kicked his girlfriend while he, she and her daughter were house-sitting a Tijeras, New Mexico, home, a "smart speaker", which happened to be integrated into the home-wide surround-sound system, saved the day...




Police would later report the following sequence of events:  A verbal argument turned into a physical fight, and that escalated again when Barros threatened his girlfriend with a gun. 




After that Barros asked his girlfriend "Did you call the sheriffs?", and the smart speaker, again which was integrated into the home's surround-sound system, apparently interpreting the statement as a request to call for help, was triggered and dialed the local Sheriff's Department.  



So Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched, arrived, made contact and, unfortunately, as Barros refused to cooperate, the incident turned into an hours-long stand-off / hostage situation, with SWAT team and hostage negotiators having to be brought in.  Barros ultimately surrendered and was reportedly charged with possession of a firearm or destructive device by a felon, aggravated battery against a household member, aggravated assault against a household member and false imprisonment.




Per Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales, III:  "The unexpected use of this new technology to contact emergency services has possibly helped save a life.  This amazing technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation."  It is presently unknown which smart device was involved in this case but, as of now the two biggies are the "Google Home"



and the "Amazon Echo".




Memo to the Folks:  There are two lessons to be learned here...
