Two women, Eva Duarte De Medinaa and her daughter Marcia Manuela Duarte-Medina jointly purchased the land for $240,000. in April, 2015 and renovated the structure for an additional $85,000.00. Undisclosed in their permitting applications were a few nontraditional "improvements" to the property, such as getting the construction teams to leave space for excavation of a "cross-border underground passageway" the length of four football fields which went from the Calexico house about 100 yards to the Mexican Border and then another 300 yards into Mexico, ending and coming out inside the popular "El Sarape restaurant in Mexicali", which is reportedly recommended in Lonely Planet for its "traditional cuisine and margaritas".
The tunnel is the 75th secret passage between the US and Mexico that has been discovered by law enforcement in the last decade, and the 12th specifically connecting California with Mexico.
After locating more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $6,000,000.00 the property owners, Eva Duarte De Medinaa and her daughter Marcia Manuela Duarte-Medinawere were found and arrested in Arizona while two men, Joel Duarte Medina and Manuel Gallegos Jiminez, were arrested in Calexico, one at the tunnel house and another at a house believed to have been used to store drugs. All four were charged in federal court with drug trafficking crimes.
Investigators believe that drug traffickers associated with Mexico's "Sinaloa Drug Cartel" have been working on the latest uncovered passage since around April, 2015. Per Laura Duffy, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California: "This house and tunnel were constructed under the watchful eye of law enforcement. For the builders, the financiers and the operators of these passageways, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. We will seize your drugs and your tunnel before you even have a chance to use it."
The latest discovery is the first completed tunnel found in a decade in Calexico, which is less of a draw for drug traffickers because the soil is harder and the city is largely residential, authorities said. San Diego is a more popular digging site because its clay-like soil is easier to dig, its Otay Mesa is industrial and it has many large warehouses which are ideal for storing and moving drugs.
